Retired Soldier Allegedly Commits Suicide Over One Rank One Pension

NEW DELHI: A retired Armyman from Haryana has allegedly committed suicide. Subedar Ram Kishen Grewal was said to be upset after he was allegedly unable to meet Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar with his complaint over the government’s One Rank One Pension or OROP scheme.

However, sources close to the Minister have told NDTV that they never received any request from the protector to meet Mr Parrikar.

The ex-serviceman, who had joined protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to demand changes in OROP, allegedly consumed poison and left behind a suicide note.

“He called us and said he is committing suicide as the government has failed to fulfil their demands related to OROP,” Subedar Grewal’s son, Ram Kishan Grewal told news agency ANI.

Protests over OROP have continued at Jantar Mantar, Delhi’s designated site for protests, after the government implemented the scheme last year. Ex-servicemen say four of their primary conditions have not been met by the government.

One Rank One Pension or OROP, a longstanding demand of ex-servicemen, grants retired armed forces personnel pension parity with officers and jawans of the same rank who are retiring now.
