An expert team led by Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS-Bengaluru) K.A. Manoharan on Tuesday visited Kochi Metro’s casting yard at Kalamassery and the Kalamassery station, as it concluded its two-day inspection of metro trains, the maintenance depot and allied amenities.
They also watched a video presentation of the load trial of a train done on Saturday, in which 390 KMRL employees were accommodated in a single coach. This is the crush load – the maximum capacity of a coach, which works to around 950 people for every three-coach train. The visuals of evacuation trials too were shown, to show how fast this many people can be evacuated to safety through eight doors on either side of every coach.
The load and evacuation trials were done on the first train brought from Alstom’s factory in Andhra Pradesh. The train has already covered 3,000 km of test and trial runs.The CMRS-led team also took stock of the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system that is being installed along the metro viaduct to keep track of train movements. The system, which is the first in India, will in the long run pave the way for unmanned train operations.
The team thus concluded its assessment of various safety features of trains and their comfort level and ride quality. A report on it is expected to be submitted to Kochi Metro Rail Limited shortly, along with directions to rectify errors if any.They were satisfied at the safety and other requirements of trains and allied metro amenities, after conducting static and dynamic tests.
They also referred documents submitted by officials of Rail Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) which issued speed certificate to the trains after they attained the design speed of 80 km per hour.
